Mary Abarr Sunday School Building |
|
More space for Sunday School was needed and the Mary Abarr Memorial Building was completed in 1928. Miss Mary Abarr was one of the outstanding pioneers in the work of the Methodist Church in Long Beach. She was a well known reporter for the Times Picayune in New Orleans, but she and her parents lived in Long Beach in a home she built at 224 Oak Street. She also built Sunshine Chapel, a small Methodist Church on Pineville Road, that was used for many years but finally sold. In 1949 the Mary Abarr Sunday School Building was moved to the South side of Pine Street in preparation for the erection of a new church. Hurricane Camille virtually destroyed the Mary Abarr building in 1969, requiring its demolition. |
